Orbitel launches WiMAX in Medellín

Orbitel, the Colombian long distance operator owned by EPM (Une Telecomunicaciones), has announced the launch of WiMAX services in Medellín, writes BNamericas. Orbitel has invested USD35 million in the roll out of wireless broadband infrastructure this year, first launching in Cali then subsequently in Bogotá, Barranquilla, Cartagena and Cucutá. The Medellín launch will reportedly happen in several phases; the tel co claims to have already installed 18 base stations and expects to add a further 26 in the first half of 2007. By the end of 2007 the company expects to have WiMAX services in twelve cities, with 10% of its revenue coming from such services.
